ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 17-52MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: View of the superior surface of the tibia. Note that most of its surface is covered by the cartilage of the menisci and the cruciate ligaments. The meniscus is designed to spread out the forces acting on the knee, especially rotational and compression forces. When the meniscus is removed, the joint surface begins to undergo destructive changes. Therefore, whenever possible, it is very beneficial to save the meniscus.
