ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 17-48MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: Damage to the knee as a result of a force applied from the outside of the knee often includes three major structures. The so-called “unhappy triad” injury includes the medial collateral ligament, the medial meniscus, and the ACL. When the femur rotates too far in either direction of the tibia, the ligaments and menisci are liable to be damaged. These are often sports-related injuries, and they occur when a person’s extended and planted limb is impacted from the posterolateral aspect of the knee.
