ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 17-42MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: The hip joint is surrounded by important nerves that may be injured during surgical repairs. The sciatic nerve, especially its peroneal part—which innervates the muscles that evert and dorsiflex the foot, and extend the toes—can be easily damaged because it runs close to the posterior part of the hip where it can be compressed by a retractor or injured by screws, drills or cement during surgery.
