DESCRIPTION:
The blood supply to the hip joint has multiple sources; the
largest supply is from the deep femoral artery via the lateral
femoral circumflex artery. Compromise of these complicated
arteries of the hip by femoral neck fracture is one of the major
reasons why femoral head replacement is so often necessary. Lack
of blood supply causes tissue death, called necrosis. Necrotic
areas of bone weaken and crumble, causing failure of the joint.
Since this area of the skeleton is under more mechanical stress
than any other, the most satisfactory results in cases of
arterial damage are attained with the insertion of a prosthetic
joint.
