DESCRIPTION:
The arteries of the lower limb. The arterial supply to the
thigh, leg, and foot is derived from the femoral artery. This
artery is the continuation of the large iliac artery. The
femoral artery branches in the thigh to form the deep femoral
artery and the perforating branches to the
hamstring muscles. The
femoral artery dives through the large adductor magnus muscle to
emerge on the back of the knee in an area called the popliteal
fossa, from which this part of the artery, the popliteal artery,
takes its name. The popliteal artery gives off the tibial and
the peroneal arteries.
