DESCRIPTION:
Damage to the nasal skeleton. The supporting skeleton of the
nose consists of bone and cartilage. The primary nasal
cartilages that support the nose are the alar cartilages
(meaning wing). These also form the opening usually referred to
as nostrils or nares (nair-ease). The other cartilage of the
nose is referred to as the lateral nasal cartilage. The nasal
cavity is subdivided by the nasal septum in normal nasal
cavities into two compartments. The nasal septum is a complex
and often-injured part of the nasal cavity. It is formed by the
perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, the septal cartilage,
and most posteriorly, by the vomer bone.
