DESCRIPTION:
First stage of labor. Onset of labor to full dilation of the
cervix, engagement of the fetal head. During the first stage of
labor, the uterine contractions push the fetus downward and
against the cervix. At this time the fetal head is said to be
engaged, meaning that is has been moved through the pelvic
inlet.
