ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 15-04aMEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: Fontanelles of the fetal skull. The irregular plates that form the fetal skull are held together by membranes. The spaces are called fontanelles; these gradually close after birth. The plates can be compressed somewhat during birth, but too much pressure on the delicate brain case can cause great damage. Excessive movement of the skull plates, whether from natural contractions or from forcible attempts at delivery, can fracture the skull and cause intracranial bleeding. See also superior view of fetal skull fontanelles.
