DESCRIPTION:
The placenta acts as both lung and kidney to the fetus. It
allows the fetal blood to be oxygenated and wastes to be
removed. Maternal blood bathes the outside of the placental
villi. Here gases are exchanged. Oxygenated blood flows back to
the fetus in the single umbilical vein. Two umbilical arteries
carry deoxygenated blood from the fetus to the placenta.
