DESCRIPTION:
Cross section through the spinal cord and vertebra. Note the
position of the sympathetic ganglion. The sympathetic ganglia
are placed like beads on a chain along the vertebral bodies in
the thorax.
Fibers
leaving the sympathetic ganglia for the most part attach to the
spinal nerves and blood vessels to be distributed throughout the
body. Sympathetic fibers are mostly concerned with activating
their target structures. Some of the fibers running with the
sympathetic nerves, however, carry pain sensations from the
periphery to the central nervous system.
