ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 12-15MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: The brachial plexus innervates the upper limb and shoulder muscles. It is formed by roots from C5 to C8 and the first thoracic (T1) nerves. Damage to the plexus is often confined to one of its parts, and this is indicated in the medical record. The parts of the plexus are the roots, trunks, divisions, cords, and terminal nerves (e.g., the radial nerve). Muscles affected by a brachial plexus injury may be weakened or completely paralyzed. Most persons with upper plexus injury hold the limb at the side in a medially rotated position. The wrist may be chronically flexed.
