DESCRIPTION:
The cervical nerve plexus is made up of intermixed fibers from
the first cervical (C1) nerve to C5. It innervates skin and
muscle in the neck and part of the head. Parts of two cranial
nerves (the accessory [CN XI] and the glossopharyngeal [CN IX])
are also associated with this plexus. The branch supplying the
diaphragm is the phrenic nerve; it is formed primarily by C4
with some contribution from C3 and C5. If the phrenic nerve of
one side is damaged or destroyed, one half of the diaphragm is
paralyzed, unless there are accessory phrenic fibers present.
