ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 12-13MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: Anterior (A) and posterior (B) views of a dermatome chart showing the areas of the skin innervated by each of the spinal nerves. The dorsal rami supply the skin and deep muscles of the back. The ventral primary rami are the most important portion of the spinal nerve. They form the intercostal nerves and the major nerve networks called plexuses. Careful testing for areas of anesthesia (no sensation) on the skin through use of the dermatome chart provides the examiner with insight into the location of a nerve or spinal injury.
