DESCRIPTION:
The lumbar spinal nerve roots. Most spinal nerves emerge from
intervertebral foramina, each of which is formed by two adjacent
vertebrae. A shift of the vertebrae or a bulging of the
intervertebral disc may exert pressure on the nerve, thereby
causing pain or weakness. After the spinal nerve exits an
intervertebral foramen, it divides almost immediately into a
dorsal ramus (branch) and a ventral primary ramus.
