DESCRIPTION:
The tongue has a complex sensory innervation. The anterior part
has two nerve supplies: one for taste, the branch from CN VII,
the facial nerve; and the
other, the trigeminal nerve (CN V), for general sensation (e.g.,
heat and cold, pain). The back of the tongue, behind the large
circumvallate taste buds, is supplied by the glossopharyngeal
nerve (CN IX). The nerve that makes the tongue move is the
hypoglossal nerve (CN XII).
