DESCRIPTION:
The external, middle, and internal ear. The external ear funnels
sound energy to the eardrum (tympanic membrane). The membrane
moves the tiny bones called ossicles. These move the fluid in
the cochlea—the sound receptor. The receiving cells are called
hair cells. Their signal is carried in the vestibulocochlear
nerve (CN VIII) to the auditory cortex. The semicircular canals
are used in maintaining balance.
