DESCRIPTION:
The cavernous sinus is a venous sinus located on either side of
the pituitary gland. Infections in the midface region can reach
the trigeminal ganglion by draining along the valveless veins of
the face and orbit to the cavernous venous sinus. This can be a
catastrophic infection, since a portion of
cranial nerves III, IV, V, and VI,
as well as the carotid artery, pass through this venous sinus.
