ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 12-05MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: The cutaneous (skin) innervation of the head and neck. Most of the area is innervated by the trigeminal nerve (CN V), which is made up of three branches that primarily supply sensation to the face. The branches, which spread out from a large collection of nerve cells in the middle cranial fossa called the trigeminal ganglion, are named the ophthalmic (V1), the maxillary (V2), and the mandibular (V3) nerves. The maxillary branch of cranial nerve V innervates the teeth of the upper jaw, whereas the mandibular branch supplies the teeth of the mandible. In addition to its sensory innervation, the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve has a much smaller motor component that innervates the chewing muscles.
