DESCRIPTION:
The 12 pairs of cranial nerves and their relation to the brain
and brain stem. Each nerve is designated by a name and a roman
numeral. The first two pairs, the olfactory (CN I) and the optic
(CN II) nerves, are actually direct extensions of the brain, but
they are included with the cranial nerves. The
other cranial
nerves arise in brain stem nuclei and course outward through
openings in the skull called foramina, to their destinations.
