ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 11-09MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: The spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. The adult cord terminates at the second lumbar vertebra (L2). The spinal nerves below this point are therefore elongated (the cauda equina or horse’s tail). Each nerve comes out of an opening called a foramen, which is formed by two adjacent vertebrae. The location of the end of the spinal cord is important for successful introduction of spinal anesthesia or lumbar puncture to obtain CSF.
