ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 11-08MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: A cross section of the scalp, skull, meninges, and part of the brain. Note that small mushroom-shaped structures are found in the superior venous sinus. These absorb cerebrospinal fluid, thus keeping secretion and absorption in balance. When there is a blockage of the CSF and the fluid builds up within the brain, a condition known as hydrocephaly results. This can now be treated by surgically implanting a shunt (tube) that allows CSF to flow from the brain and into the peritoneal cavity.
