ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 11-02bMEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: A sagittal section of the brain, brain stem, and pituitary gland. The large corpus callosum can now be seen. It connects the two cerebral hemispheres. The brain stem is the site of many automatic regulatory centers (e.g., for heart rate and breathing). The cerebellum has a pattern distinct from the rest of the brain. It has flat “leaves” called folia. The central part of the cerebellum forms a distinct “tree of life” (arbor vitae). The pituitary gland hangs from the inferior surface of the brain. The ventricles that contain the cerebrospinal fluid are labeled, as are the choroid vessels that manufacture it.
