ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 8-02MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: A uterine tube and an ovary. The fringe-like fimbriae of the uterine tube hang down over the ovary. If an ovum is ovulated, it is usually swept into the funnel-shaped opening of the tube. Since a space exists between the tube and the ovary, some ova (even fertilized ova) can escape into the pelvis. The ovary contains several stages of ovarian follicles. The corpus luteum is a yellowish group of cells that secrete progesterone after the ovum is shed. The corpus albicans is a scar left on the ovary after ovulation. Only one ovum is usually ovulated at a time.
