ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 7-05MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: Veins of the abdominal viscera (gut) drain into the hepatic (liver) portal system. They carry nutrient-laden blood to the liver for processing. All of the veins of the intestines drain into a large vein called the portal vein. Obstruction of the hepatic circulation will cause elevated venous pressure in the portal system. This is called portal hypertension. The pressure due to portal hypertension is a cause of anal vein dilatations called hemorrhoids and may cause similar enlargement of the veins in the esophagus.
