DESCRIPTION:
The respiratory portion of the pharynx begins at the nose and
extends to the level of the larynx (voice box). The mouth, of
course, is also used for respiration. The nasal portion of the
pharynx has small plates called conchae protruding from its
lateral walls. The conchae cover the openings of the paranasal
sinuses from which mucus drains into the nasal cavity. The roof
of the nasopharynx has receptors for the sense of smell.
