DESCRIPTION:
A cross section through the chest cavity as viewed from below
toward the patient’s head. Note that the lungs are enclosed by a
thin membrane called the pleura. The pleura also covers the
walls of the chest cavity. This creates a sac within a sac. If
it is punctured, the lung will collapse. The heart is also seen
in this figure. It too is enclosed in a double-walled sac called
the pericardial sac.
