DESCRIPTION:
The conduction system of the heart spreads nerve impulses to all
parts of the heart, keeping it beating synchronously. The heart
is innervated by the autonomic, or automatic, portion of the
nervous system. Disruption or malfunction of the innervation of
the heart may cause an erratic heartbeat or death. An electronic
pacemaker may be implanted in the chest wall with electrodes
attached to the heart, to ensure a consistent heartbeat.
