ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 5-05MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: Diagram of the circulation of the blood. When the red blood cells reach the lungs, they give off waste gases and bind with oxygen. The blood then returns to the heart via the pulmonary veins and flows into the left atrium. Diastole allows blood to move from the left atrium via the left atrioventricular valve, also called the mitral or bicuspid valve, and into the left ventricle. When the heart contracts again in systole, the left atrioventricular valve closes, and blood in the left ventricle passes into the aorta for distribution to the body.
