ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 4-18MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: Cross section through the right leg at the middle of the calf. This part of the leg is called the anterior compartment or extensor compartment. It has three major muscles. It is in this compartment of the leg that “shin splints” occur. This painful condition is caused by tearing or inflammation of the muscles in this tightly covered compartment. The muscles of the anterior leg are often the first to be affected by the nerve and vessel degeneration associated with advanced diabetes. This causes “foot drop” when the limb is raised to take a step. See also cross section midway through the right thigh.
