ILLUSTRATION NUMBER: 4-16MEV-L6

DETAIL:

DESCRIPTION: The deep buttocks (gluteal) muscles are mostly rotators of the hip joint. The sciatic nerve is also seen in this figure as it exits the pelvis. The gluteus maximus is one of the largest muscles in the body; it is strong, thick, and tough. It inserts partly onto sheets of strong connective tissue in the thigh called fascia and partly into the femur (thigh bone). When it contracts, it can either extend the thigh or rotate it outward. It is used in running up hills, getting out of chairs, and in general locomotion.
