DESCRIPTION:
Lateral view of the neck vertebrae. The dense ligaments of the
neck are very apparent. The articulations of each vertebra are
covered by fibrous capsules. The anterior longitudinal ligament
provides anterior support for the cervical spine and resists
hyperextension (e.g., the movement used when looking up at the
ceiling). The posterior longitudinal ligament resists
hyperflexion (e.g., looking down at your toes). The ligamentum
flava is important because it holds the adjacent laminae, which
form the roof of the neural canal, in alignment. The
supraspinous ligaments and the ligamentum nuchae, together with
the deeper interspinous ligaments, bind the spines together,
thereby providing great strength yet remarkable neck mobility.
